Mercury Retrograde in Virgo
Mercury stationed Retrograde on August 23 and stations direct on September 15th.
Why do we always talk about this particular event, afterall it happens A LOT, four times a year in fact. We will spend 84 days (non-consecutive) in 2023 in this particular space, four separate cycles throughout the year. That is why we talk about it all the time. It is happening often enough that it disrupts our lives or slows us down in some way. It brings us out of the monotony of our routined ways of communicating, thinking, analyzing, and working.
The energy of Mercury is many things to us. It is the energy that fuels (or not) our communication, our minds - the way we process information, it’s our intellect. It also rules all methods of communication, including the internet, texts, tones, and not to mention it rules technology.
When we hear the warnings of this cycle, it’s only a warning of being cautious and intentional with how we speak, how we think, to be more aware of the mistakes we can make in writing (contracts, emails, texts), is our tone harsh? Did we double check that contract? Did we double and triple check our travel plans?
On a deeper level (and depending on where it is in the sky) it’s also a call to observe the words we say to ourselves, what limiting beliefs we are holding on to, the places where we hold ourselves back in our communications. Where are we not being honest with ourselves?
This particular retrograde has taken place on the stage of Virgo energy. This doesn’t mean it only affects Virgos. No. Each and everyone of us has Virgo in our energetic makeup, it is just in a different place than a Solar Virgo. Maybe you have Mercury in the sign of Virgo - this would have been a particularly interesting period of time for you. If you are a Virgo, Sun, Moon, or Rising or if you have any personal planets in the sign of Virgo (Mercury, Venus, and Mars) - this may have been a time of intensity, a trip through the underworld of your shadowed thoughts, behaviors, and a deep look into what you value.
Virgo is ruled by the planet and energy of Mercury. It’s in its own home. It’s disrupting her own home, moving things around, reconsidering all that which is it’s own. Virgo is about the attention to detail, their work in the world, the most effective way to do something, their health and body. Their craft. This is a time of evaluation. Retrogrades are nothing to fear.
They do cause frustrations, delays, miscommunications, and travel mishaps so triple check your travel plans, any contracts you are going to sign during this time, or any life-altering situation in general.
Retrogrades are for deep contemplation, reflection, and when they station direct we have a better idea and are ready to create a plan to integrate what we’ve learned and how we want to show up differently.
Don’t get me wrong…sometimes they are intense. Change is uncomfortable. Always. Even when I’m excited and cannot wait for the change, there is always an underlying discomfort. Always.
Mercury affects all signs - in 2023, Earth signs Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn are likely feeling this more intensely.
Virgo is a planner.
As you think about what has been coming up for you, consider writing a list. What do you want to do with all your plans in your head? What are you going to start doing? What are you going to stop doing?
Virgo is also about implementation. This energy is solution oriented.
