What is Astrology?

What is Astrology and how can understanding Astrology benefit a person?

Astrology is a language that helps us understand our world. It is not a belief system. It is the study of the correlation between the astronomical positions of the planets and events on the earth.

Astrology has long been used as a tool to explore and understand ourselves and others psychologically. It is a self awareness tool. “Know thyself” was the ancient greek aphorism that was inscribed in the forecourt of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. Astrology is a powerful tool in the study of ‘Knowing oneself.’ Astrology birth charts date back to Mesopotamian 410 BCE and the concept of natal astrology was developed at this time. In the bible, Astrologers are referred to as “Wise Men,” I will let you look into that one yourself.

How does that benefit you?

Your personal Astrology is calculated by the day, time, and location of your birth. This tells us the exact location of the planets and what was happening in the heavens when you entered the earth as an individual. It is important that when looking at your Astrology, the entire chart is taken into consideration. You are not your sun sign, well, you aren’t only just your sun sign. We want to look at your Sun, Moon, Rising and what other aspects are being made to these three. We also look at your energy dynamics, your relationships, your work, career, and what you value. You life lessons and your highest evolution are some of the most powerful tools in self realization and give incredible directives on how to improve your life.

Each person has their own blueprint natal chart, which can really complicate a culture where it seems more convenient to create a template and demand others mold themselves to it. Ever wonder why one method works for one person but not another? Simply put, we aren’t made the same way. We are all imprinted with different energetic layers based on the elements of the planet we are currently residing. We came in with plans and purposes and those that are creating these “boxes” have no concern or insight into what you are really here to do. You were actually created with an instruction manual, you just need to have it translated. Free choice comes in through how we express the energetic layers and cycles, we can choose the highest expression or live in victim consciousness and survive in the low expression. Astrology is extremely complicated but there are simple ways to start the study of your own personal Astrology.

So where to start?

You can pull your chart from any free service, I like Astro Charts for beginners. There is a wealth of information to begin with. I suggest starting with your Sun, Moon, and Rising (Ascendant) signs. If you would prefer to schedule a session with me instead, you can schedule here .

Here is a short breakdown about what you can learn from your Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs:

Sun: This is our most powerful influential force (which is why it gets so much attention in “pop culture astrology.” In many ways, the Sun sign determines how others see us. It governs your individuality, your distinctive style, and your drive to fulfill your goals in life. It is the “Role” you play in this drama called life. It also represents our future and the fulfillment of your potential, which is a lifelong process.

“But I don’t resonate with my Sun Sign characteristics…”

I often hear people say that they don’t resonate with the characteristics of their sun sign. There are many reasons for this. First, most children up to about age 12 are more closely connected to their moon sign, that is the sign that should be studied more intensely for that age and younger. I also find that someone who doesn’t resonate with their sun sign typically has the majority in other elements that are not very compatible with the element that is their sun sign. If someone is a Capricorn Sun but they have 6 planets in Leo, then they are going to be flavored (fire) much differently than someone who has a lot of earth and Capricorn energy in their chart.

Moon: This is likely the energy that you see (the sun is what others see). The Moon represents your internal emotional world. Your instincts and unconscious self = the side of you that reacts before you have time to think (this is why children resonate with the moon more - they are more present and less future minded). The moon rules your 5 senses. The moon is the past with all previous programming and memories.

The moon modifies the Sun in different ways, so if you are a Sagittarius Sun but have a Capricorn Moon, you may be a very serious child that takes things very personally, or has a difficult childhood. The fiery Sagittarius will come in later and develop in partnership with the moon. Of course it also depends on what other planets are aspecting the Sun and Moon as well as what houses they fall in (always more layers).

Rising Sign aka Ascendant: represents how you project yourself into your environment. It reflects your outward demeanor and to a great extent determines how the outside world looks at you. Its your “outer” personality, “your image.” It is what the world sees first in you. The impression you makes on other people. It’s usually more revealing than your sun sign. The personality you outwardly project is usually a perfect blend of your Sun and Rising combined; your moon is a more hidden aspect. The Rising usually characterizes how you deal with others and your distinctive style of interacting with people. It speaks of your coping mechanisms and how you react to anything new that life throws at you. It is the sign of your self - your self awareness, your self sufficiency, and self interest. It signifies your goals, aims, and objectives. It indicates the main thrust of your creative powers.

This is a lot, I know. It is also incredibly valuable to understand the complexity of who you are. There was no mistake when you were born, you were born at the exact time to create the journey and purpose of your lifetime. You are a once in a lifetime creation and it was all directed in a precise way. Give yourself the gift of knowing thyself, dive into your chart and leave a comment of what you realized about yourself afterwards. It’s truly a powerful gift and it will inspire and motivate you to live in that highest expression of who you came here to be.
